Ethanol Vehicles' Fuel Mileage Driving The Popularity Of EthanolEthanol vehicles fuel mileage, amongst other things, is being debated as we see a rise in the number of those who use fuel blended with ethanol in the different types of engines they run. Ethanol is derived from plants. It is used as a fuel when it is either mixed with gasoline or used separately in any combustion engine. Cars, trucks, lawnmowers and boats use ethanol as a fuel. It is widely used as a fuel because it has a number of advantages over gasoline, the major one being that it is a renewable source and it reduces the emission of pollutants. Ethanol vehicles' fuel mileage is much more than the mileage in other vehicles due to factors which will be discussed further in the article.
Let us get some knowledge about the process by which ethanol is prepared. It is made through a distillation process which is based on the fermentation of vegetable matter. Corn, potatoes and sugarcane are used to make ethanol. Ethanol involves extremely clean burning. It can also be used in closed rooms to burn lanterns as it does not emit any toxic fumes. Unlike gasoline, that produces carbon monoxide which is deadly to all life forms, ethanol does not produce toxic substances and has a much higher octane rating. Ethanol is consumed 34% more than that of gasoline. The high compression ratios also allows the ethanol engine to give increased output and also better fuel economy as compared to low compression ratios. These ethanol operated engines are tuned to give improved power and torque. If we talk about the cost and compare it with other counterparts, it is observed that ethanol engine is more cost effective. The most commonly used ethanol types include E10 and E85. E10 ethanol is a blend of 10% ethanol and 90% gasoline and E85 consists 85 %ethanol and only 15% gasoline. E85 gives lower mileage than gasoline and requires more frequent refueling. Also, the actual performance of the vehicle will be vary depending upon the vehicle. The prices of E85 is also much lower than gasoline. Since it burns clean and has minimum gasoline therefore it is better for the environment and gives less gas emissions. Since ethanol fuel is eco -friendly and ensures very less harm to the environment and the surroundings and also because ethanol vehicles' fuel mileage is enhanced, it is used on a large scale. Another reason for it's increased use is that the oil resources of the country are dwindling. Therefore, as a backup in the form of alternative fuels, ethanol has become more popular. |
